OUR HISTORY

Founded by David R. Nelson in 1971, D. R. Nelson & Company was established as an antiquarian bookstore with locations in New Bedford, Fairhaven, and Wareham, Massachusetts. Nelson was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1978 and would later serve as Sheriff of Bristol County from 1983-1997.

Initially specializing in whaling and maritime collectibles, leather bindings, and historical publications, D. R. Nelson & Company broadened its inventory during the early 21st century by introducing fresh concentrations in unique ephemera and political memorabilia, resulting in a rapid expansion featuring partnerships and sales channels involving international auction houses, cultural institutions, and multiple e-commerce platforms.

Today, D. R. Nelson & Company’s loyal customer base spans all 50 states and 100+ countries.
